University College Dublin (UCD)
The University College Dublin has its origins in the mid-nineteenth century under the leadership of the renowned educationalist John Henry Cardinal Newman. Since its foundation in 1854, the University has flourished and made a unique and substantial contribution to the creation of modern Ireland. UCD is one of Europe’s leading research-intensive universities; an environment where undergraduate education, masters and PhD training, research, innovation and community engagement form a dynamic spectrum of activity.
UCD is also Ireland’s most globally engaged university with over 30,000 students drawn from over 120 countries, and includes 5,500 students based at locations outside of Ireland.
Transport to and from UCD
UCD is located approximately 7 km south of the city centre and 18.7 km south of Dublin Airport. UCD is directly accessible by bus, private car, taxi and foot depending on proximity. Dublin buses are available throughout the city with various routes serving UCD, the city centre and the airport. Please click here to view the Dublin Bus website for a list of routes.
There are a number of Dublin Bus routes to and from the university campus. The main routes we recommend are
- 46A – This is the most frequent and therefore the recommended bus route to use travelling to/from Dublin City.
- 39A – This route goes by Trinity College, Grafton Street and Baggot Street.
- 145 – This route runs from Heuston Station and goes by Stephen’s Green
Dublin Bus offers a special service from Dublin Airport to the City Centre called the Airlink. These routes are:
- The Airlink 747 & 757
- Which costs €6 single and €10 return
Aircoach provides a 24-hour luxury coach service between Dublin Airport and Dublin city, UCD and many of Dublin’s major hotels. Tickets can be purchased from the driver when boarding, at a ticket agent or ordered online
Taxi / Cab
Taxi/ Cabs are readily available in Dublin however there is no taxi rank in UCD. We recommend that you download the free Mytaxi app. The app allows users to order taxis to their current location or to a specific location. To download the app search Mytaxi in any app store or Click here to visit their website. A taxi for 1 person should cost approximately €30 – €45 to get from Dublin Airport to UCD, or the Talbot Hotel.
